Cable extrusion line

An extrusion line applies plastic as insulation or sheath to a conductor or cable. It consists of several machines that work one after another at the same pace.

Design and function

The line starts with the pay-off, often with a dancer and a conductor preheater. In the extruder a screw melts the granulate; in the crosshead the melt wraps around the conductor. The plastic then solidifies in the cooling trough.

Gauges check diameter, wall thickness and roundness; the spark tester looks for faults in the insulation. A haul-off keeps the speed, an accumulator buffers the drum change, and the take-up lays the cable onto the drum.

Where it is used

Extrusion lines exist for thin cores as well as for thick power cables. They differ in screw diameter, line speed and number of extruders, for example for coloured stripes or several layers.

Typical spare and wear parts

  • Screws, barrels and heater bands of the extruder
  • Tips and dies of the crosshead
  • Guide rollers, pumps and nozzles of the cooling trough
  • Belts and caterpillar tracks of the haul-off
  • Temperature sensors, pressure sensors and gauge heads
