A drawing die is a tool with a very hard, funnel-shaped bore through which wire is pulled. In the process the wire becomes thinner, longer and stronger.
Design and function
The core of the die is made of tungsten carbide, natural diamond or polycrystalline diamond and sits in a steel casing. The bore has several zones: entry, reduction cone, cylindrical bearing and exit. The wire is deformed in the reduction cone; the bearing sets the final diameter.
A drawing machine works with a whole series of dies one after another. Each die reduces the cross-section by one step only. Drawing lubricants such as emulsion, oil or drawing soap lubricate and cool.
Where it is used
Drawing dies are used in rod breakdown, intermediate and fine wire drawing machines for copper, aluminium and steel. Over time the bore widens and shows scoring. The die is then recut to the next larger diameter or replaced.
Typical spare and wear parts
- Drawing dies and complete die sets by diameter series
- Die holders and casings
- Seals and nozzles of the lubricant supply
- Polishing compounds and tools for reconditioning
