Stranding machine

A stranding machine twists several single wires into a strand, or several cores into an assembly. This is how flexible conductors and multi-core cables are made.

Design and function

The wires run off bobbins and are brought together at the stranding point. There a closing die shapes the strand. The lay length states the distance over which one wire winds once around the centre. It results from rotational speed and haul-off speed.

Different types exist depending on the product: planetary and rigid cage stranders with bobbins in the rotating cage, tubular stranders, bow stranders and double-twist bunchers for fine strands. Brakes at the bobbins keep the tension of each wire even.

Where it is used

Stranding machines stand in cable and rope plants between wire drawing and extrusion. They produce conductor strands, lay up insulated cores and apply screen or armour wires.

Typical spare and wear parts

  • Closing dies and guide bushings
  • Bobbin bearings, pintles and bobbin brakes
  • Drive belts, gears and bearings of the cage
  • Ceramic wire and thread guides
  • Haul-off capstans and their linings
