A closing die is a tool with a precise bore that shapes the converging wires into a round strand at the stranding point.
Design and function
The die is made of tungsten carbide, ceramic or polycrystalline diamond and sits in a holder. Its bore determines the outer diameter of the strand. The entry is rounded so that the wires run in without scratches.
Dies are often split so that the strand can be inserted. For compacted conductors the die is followed by compacting tools or rollers that press the cross-section together further.
Where it is used
Closing dies are fitted to every stranding and bunching machine. The bore wears through the friction of the wires. If it becomes too large or scored, diameter and surface of the strand are no longer right.
Typical spare and wear parts
- Closing dies, split or solid, by bore diameter
- Die holders and clamping parts
- Compacting tools and compacting rollers
- Guide bushings ahead of the stranding point
