The extrusion crosshead is the tool at the end of the extruder. Inside it the plastic melt wraps evenly around the conductor passing through.
Design and function
The conductor passes through the head at right angles to the screw. The melt is deflected inside the head and distributed in a ring. Two parts give the shape: the tip guides the conductor, the die determines the outer diameter.
A distinction is made between pressure tooling, where the melt meets the conductor inside the head, and tubing tooling, where it settles on the conductor just behind it. Adjusting screws or self-centring designs set the wall thickness evenly all round.
Where it is used
Every cable extrusion line has at least one crosshead; for several layers or colour stripes there are multi-layer heads. Tip and die are changed to suit conductor and wall thickness and are among the parts reordered most often.
Typical spare and wear parts
- Tips and dies by diameter
- Distributors and tip holders
- Heater bands, cartridge heaters and temperature sensors
- Screws and sealing faces of the centring
- Breaker plates and screens ahead of the head
