A spark tester is a test device that checks the insulation of a cable with high voltage while it passes through. At a fault a spark breaks through to the conductor and the device reports it.
Design and function
The cable runs through an electrode, for example a curtain of bead chains or a brush, which touches the insulation all round. The electrode is under high voltage; the conductor is earthed. If the insulation is too thin or damaged at one point, a breakdown occurs.
The device counts every fault and sends a signal to the line, for instance to a fault marker. There are testers for alternating voltage, direct voltage and high frequency. The test voltage depends on cable type and standard.
Where it is used
Spark testers stand in extrusion lines behind the cooling trough and on rewinding and stranding lines. They test the entire length produced and complement the measurement of diameter and wall thickness.
