A drawing capstan is a driven disc in the wire drawing machine. The wire lies on it in several wraps and is pulled through the die in front of it.
Design and function
The capstan sits on a shaft and is turned by a gearbox or an individual drive. Its running surface is hardened or coated, often with ceramic or tungsten carbide, because the wire rubs there constantly. From draft to draft the capstans run faster, since the wire becomes longer with every die.
In wet drawing machines the capstans run in the lubricant. There the wire slips slightly on the capstan by design. In non-slip machines, dancers or controlled drives balance the speed.
Where it is used
Drawing capstans work in every multi-die drawing machine for copper, aluminium and steel wire. A grooved running surface leaves marks on the wire. The capstan is then reground, recoated or replaced.
