A continuous annealer heats drawn wire with electric current while it passes through. This makes the work-hardened wire soft and easy to bend again.
Design and function
The wire runs over several contact pulleys that carry voltage. The current flows through the length of wire between the pulleys and heats it within fractions of a second. Carbon brushes and slip rings transfer the current to the rotating pulleys.
To keep the hot wire from tarnishing, the annealing section is under protective gas or steam. Immediately afterwards water or emulsion cools the wire, and it is then dried. The annealing power follows the line speed.
Where it is used
Continuous annealers stand directly behind the drawing machine, mainly for copper and aluminium wire. The wire then runs on without interruption to the spooler or to the next production step.
