Drive spindle in the rolling mill

A drive spindle transmits the torque from the gearbox to the roll. Its joints compensate for the fact that the roll changes its height during adjustment and is not in line with the gearbox.

Design and function

The shaft has a universal joint at each end. Each consists of two yokes and a cross that runs in rolling bearings. A sliding section in the middle compensates for changes in length. At the roll end a coupling head fits onto the roll neck.

In heavy stands gear spindles or slipper spindles are also used. The shaft is selected according to torque, deflection angle and available space.

Where it is used

Drive spindles work between pinion stand and mill stand and on roller tables, pinch rolls and straighteners. Shocks during bite load the joints heavily, so crosses and bearings are checked and replaced regularly.

Typical spare and wear parts
