Strand guide rollers support and guide the still glowing strand after the mould. They prevent the thin shell from bulging under the pressure of the liquid core.
Design and function
The rollers sit close together in segments. Some are driven and pull the strand; the others only support it. For wide slabs the rollers are split and supported at several points.
The rollers are cooled with water from inside or sprayed from outside. Their surface usually carries a weld overlay of heat- and corrosion-resistant steel. The bearings work in heat, water and scale and need good sealing.
Where it is used
Strand guide rollers work in billet, bloom and slab casters between the mould and the torch cutting machine. Worn rollers are removed, rewelded and turned, or replaced by new ones.
Typical spare and wear parts
- Rollers and roller sleeves made to drawing
- Rolling bearings, bearing housings and seals
- Rotary unions for the cooling water
- Spray nozzles of the secondary cooling
- Drive spindles of the driven rollers
