Cooling bed

On the cooling bed rolled bars and sections cool in air. The equipment carries them sideways step by step so that they cool evenly and stay straight.

Design and function

The rake-type cooling bed is common: fixed and moving rakes with notched bars lie alternately side by side. The moving rakes lift the bars, carry them one notch further and set them down again. A shaft with eccentrics produces the stroke.

A roller table with braking slides brings the bars onto the bed. At the end a device collects the bars into layers and passes them to the roller table leading to the shear or straightener.

Where it is used

Cooling beds stand in bar, section and tube mills behind the last stand. Rollers, chains and bearings work in radiant heat and scale and are among the parts replaced regularly.

Typical spare and wear parts

  • Rake bars and notched bars
  • Eccentric shafts, bearings and bushings
  • Roller table rollers and roller table motors
  • Chains, sprockets and carriers
  • Hydraulic and pneumatic cylinders of the braking slides
