Rolls are the tools of the rolling mill: between two rotating rolls the steel becomes thinner and longer. Grooved rolls carry turned grooves that give the rolled stock its shape.
Design and function
A roll consists of the barrel, which touches the stock, the necks for the bearings and the coupling end for the drive. Plain rolls produce plate and strip; grooved rolls produce bars, wire rod, rails and sections.
Materials are cast iron, cast steel, forged steel and high-speed steel. In wire rod blocks small roll rings of tungsten carbide are used. Which material fits depends on stand, temperature and stock.
Where it is used
Rolls wear at the surface and develop fire cracks. They are regularly removed and re-turned or reground until the minimum diameter is reached. Then a new roll is needed.
