A stamping machine presses characters permanently into the surface of a steel product. Heat number, grade and manufacturer thus remain legible after transport and storage.
Design and function
There are two basic types: in impact stamping a ram presses a stamping head with type onto the stationary part. In roll stamping a stamping wheel rolls along the passing product. The hardened steel type is changed per order or set by number wheels.
The machine sits in a rigid frame and is driven hydraulically or pneumatically. A control system takes the data from the plant’s production system. Stamping is done hot or cold, depending on product and position in the line.
Where it is used
Stamping machines mark billets and slabs on the end face, bars, sections and tubes on the circumference, and wire rod coils by attached tags. There are also non-deforming methods such as paint and laser marking.
