A welding robot is an industrial robot that guides a welding tool. It sets spot welds or lays seams always at the same place and with the same values.
Design and function
The usual design is an articulated robot with six axes. Each axis has a servo motor, a low-backlash gear unit and a position encoder. The tool sits on the wrist flange: a spot weld gun or a torch for gas-shielded arc welding.
A dress pack carries current, cooling water, gas and wire to the tool. The controller stores path and welding parameters. The cell also includes the power source, the fixture, the safety fence and often a station that cleans the torch or dresses the electrode caps.
Where it is used
Welding robots work in body shops, on axles, seats and exhaust systems, and at suppliers. Spot welding dominates in body construction, gas-shielded arc welding for thicker components.
