Spot weld gun

A spot weld gun presses two or more sheets together between two copper electrodes. A short, strong current pulse melts the sheets at this point and joins them.

Design and function

By shape, there is the X-gun with two pivoting arms and the C-gun with a straight stroke. The force comes from a pneumatic cylinder or a servo motor. The welding transformer is usually built into the gun so that the current path stays short.

The electrode arms carry shanks with push-on electrode caps made of a copper alloy. Arms, shanks and transformer are water-cooled. The caps deform with every spot and are regularly dressed and replaced.

Where it is used

Spot weld guns hang on robots or are guided by hand. They are the most important joining tool in body construction and also work on seats, housings and sheet metal parts of all kinds.

Typical spare and wear parts

  • Electrode caps and electrode shanks
  • Electrode arms and current shunts
  • Pneumatic cylinders or servo drives
  • Cooling water hoses, couplings and flow monitors
  • Bearings and bushings of the gun joints
