A robot gripper is the tool at the end of the robot arm with which it picks up, holds and sets down parts. It is matched to the shape, weight and surface of the part.
Design and function
Mechanical grippers have two or three fingers that move in parallel or at an angle. They are driven by compressed air or electrically. Vacuum grippers hold flat parts such as sheets and panes with suction cups; magnetic grippers hold steel parts.
The gripper fingers are made specially for each part. Sensors report whether the gripper is open or closed and whether a part is present. A tool changer on the robot flange allows the gripper to be swapped quickly.
Where it is used
Grippers work in loading and unloading presses and machines, in assembly and in palletising. Large sheet metal parts in body construction are moved by gripper frames with many suction cups and clamps.
Typical spare and wear parts
- Gripper fingers and jaws made to drawing
- Suction cups, vacuum generators and vacuum switches
- Seal kits and guides of pneumatic grippers
- Proximity switches and cables
- Tool changers and couplings
