A toggle power clamp holds a component in a fixture so that it stays exactly in place during welding, bonding or measuring. In body construction it usually works with compressed air.
Design and function
A pneumatic cylinder moves the clamp arm through a toggle lever. In the end position the lever is straight and locks itself. The arm then holds even if the compressed air fails. The housing is enclosed so that weld spatter does not block the mechanism.
The clamp arm carries pressure pads or contour blocks that match the sheet metal part. Sensors report the positions open and clamped to the controller. Related components are pin clamps and locating clamps, which also align the part through a hole.
Where it is used
Toggle power clamps are fitted by the hundred in the fixtures and gripper frames of body shops. They work at the cycle rate of the line and are usually replaced as a unit when worn.
