Rolling bearing

A rolling bearing carries a rotating shaft and holds it in position. Balls or rollers roll between an inner and an outer ring, which is why the bearing runs with very little friction.

Design and function

A rolling bearing consists of inner ring, outer ring, rolling elements and a cage that keeps the rolling elements apart. Ball bearings suit high speeds, roller bearings high loads. Tapered roller and spherical roller bearings also take forces along the shaft or compensate for misalignment.

Design and main dimensions are standardised. The designation on the ring states type, size and version, for example sealing, cage and internal clearance. Bearings need grease or oil and protection from dirt and water.

Where it is used

Rolling bearings are fitted in gearboxes, motors, pumps, rolls, roller tables and machine tools. Noise, heat and play indicate that a bearing is worn. Usually the whole bearing is replaced together with the seal.

Typical spare and wear parts

  • Ball, roller and needle bearings by designation
  • Bearing units and bearing housings
  • Adapter sleeves, withdrawal sleeves and lock nuts
  • Shaft seals
  • Lubricants and lubricators
