A hydraulic cylinder converts the pressure of a hydraulic fluid into a straight movement. It lifts, presses, clamps or adjusts machine parts with high force.
Design and function
Inside the cylinder tube a piston with a piston rod moves. When oil flows to one side of the piston, the rod extends or retracts. Seals on piston and rod keep the oil in the cylinder, guide rings absorb side loads, and a wiper keeps dirt out.
Single-acting cylinders work in one direction only, double-acting cylinders in both. Piston diameter, rod diameter, stroke and operating pressure determine force and size. Mounting is by flange, rod eye or trunnion.
Where it is used
Hydraulic cylinders work in presses, rolling mills, injection moulding machines, construction machinery and lifting platforms. Typical damage is leaking seals and damaged piston rods. An overhaul with a new seal kit is often worthwhile.
Typical spare and wear parts
- Seal kits for piston and rod
- Piston rods, hard chrome plated
- Guide rings and wipers
- Rod ends and spherical bearings
- Complete cylinders by nameplate or drawing
