Mechanical engineering

Couplings connect motor and gearbox or gearbox and machine. They compensate small misalignments and protect the bearings. Their flexible elements wear and belong to the spare part demand.

Three common designs

Flexible jaw couplings transmit torque via an elastomer spider. It damps shocks and compensates misalignment; its hardness is stated in Shore. Gear couplings transmit high torques with angular misalignment and need lubrication. All-steel disc couplings work without backlash and maintenance via thin steel discs.

For the replacement, size, rated torque, the bores of both hubs with keyway and, for flexible couplings, the hardness of the spider matter. Replacing only the spider requires size and hardness.

What a request for couplings should contain

  • design and size, if known
  • bore diameter of both hubs and keyway
  • torque or motor power and speed
  • for spiders: hardness and colour
  • quantity, also spiders for stock
