Industrial valve

Industrial valves are components in pipelines that shut off the flow, control it or limit it to one direction. They include ball valves, gate valves, globe valves, butterfly valves and check valves.

Design and function

Every valve has a pressure-retaining body, a movable closure member and a seat on which it seals. A stem or shaft leads to the outside, where it is sealed with packing or sealing rings. Operation is manual, pneumatic, electric or hydraulic.

The type depends on the task: ball valves and gate valves shut off, globe valves control, butterfly valves suit large nominal sizes, and safety valves protect against overpressure. Nominal size, pressure rating, type of connection and material determine which valve fits.

Where it is used

Valves are fitted to every line in refineries, chemical plants, tank farms and power stations. Regulations apply to pressure equipment, explosion protection and certain media; the required documents must be available for the specific valve.
