Rolls shape the rolled stock and are exposed to enormous pressure and temperature changes in the mill. They and their bearings are among the most important spare parts of every rolling stand.

Rolls and their bearings

Work rolls are in contact with the stock, backup rolls take up the rolling force in four-high stands. Depending on the application, rolls are made of cast iron, cast steel, forged steel or high-speed steel. Wear and fire cracks are removed by regrinding until the minimum diameter is reached.

The rolls are supported in chocks, often with multi-row cylindrical or tapered roller bearings, and large backup rolls also with oil film bearings. Bearings and seals of the chocks are checked at roll change and replaced if needed.
