Mechanical seals seal the rotating shaft of a pump against the casing. They are precise wear parts whose failure means leakage and downtime.

Structure and materials

A rotating seal face runs on a stationary seat; a thin film of liquid between the faces lubricates and seals. Springs press the rings together, secondary seals of elastomer or PTFE seal to the shaft and the casing. Common face materials are carbon, silicon carbide and tungsten carbide.

Single seals are sufficient for many media. For hazardous or hot media, double seals with a barrier fluid are used. In refineries and chemical plants API 682 is a widespread basis, EN 12756 for the installation dimensions of many standard pumps.

What a request for a mechanical seal should contain

  • pump type and seal type designation
  • shaft diameter and installation dimensions
  • medium, pressure, temperature and speed
  • materials of faces and secondary seals
  • single or double seal with supply system
