Many steel and metal products come with an inspection document. It proves material and properties. Which type is needed must be stated in the request.

The document types

EN 10204 distinguishes documents without and with test results. The declaration of compliance 2.1 only confirms conformity with the order. The test report 2.2 contains results of non-specific inspection, that is from ongoing production.

The inspection certificate 3.1 contains results of specific inspection on the delivered lot and is confirmed by the maker’s authorised inspector independent of production. With inspection certificate 3.2, the purchaser’s authorised inspector or the inspector designated by official regulations also confirms. 3.2 involves more effort and must be agreed before production.

What a request with an inspection document should contain

  • type of document: 2.2, 3.1 or 3.2
  • for 3.2: who inspects
  • properties to be tested, if beyond the standard
  • material standard and steel grade
  • quantity and requested delivery date
