Valves shut off, control and protect pipelines. For the replacement, type, pressure rating, connection and material matter. A wrong pressure rating does not always show at the flange: at small nominal sizes, PN 10 and PN 16 for example have the same connection dimensions.

Types and pressure ratings

Ball valves and butterfly valves open and close with a quarter turn, gate valves clear the full bore, globe valves suit control duties. Check valves prevent backflow. Valves are operated by hand, pneumatically or electrically.

For flanges to EN 1092-1 the pressure rating is stated as PN, for example PN 16 or PN 40, for flanges to ASME B16.5 as Class, for example Class 150 or 300. The two systems have different bolt circles and are not directly interchangeable. Nominal size, face-to-face length, body and seal material are added.

What a request for valves should contain

  • type, nominal size and pressure rating (PN or Class)
  • connection: flange, thread or weld end
  • body and seal material
  • medium, pressure and temperature
  • actuator and accessories such as position indicators
