What the marking says

Under the ATEX directive, equipment carries among other things equipment group and category, for example II 2G for surface equipment in gas hazardous areas of zone 1. The type of protection is added, for example Ex d for flameproof enclosure, Ex e for increased safety or Ex i for intrinsic safety.

The gas group IIA, IIB or IIC describes which gases the equipment is suitable for; IIC is the strictest. The temperature class T1 to T6 states the maximum surface temperature, T6 being the lowest. A replacement must meet at least the same requirements in category, gas group and temperature class, plus ambient temperature range, a type of protection that suits the circuit and special conditions from the certificate.

What a request for Ex equipment should contain

  • full Ex marking from the nameplate
  • zone, gas group and temperature class of the location
  • ambient temperature at the location
  • electrical data and connection type
  • type designation of the previous unit
  • required certificates
