Many plants run reliably with controllers that have long gone out of production. If a module fails, good preparation helps to find a replacement quickly.

What matters for the replacement

A controller consists of a CPU module, input and output modules, power supply and communication modules. Each has an order number and often a hardware or firmware revision. With CPU modules in particular, a different revision can mean that the program does not run.

An up-to-date backup of the control program and the parameters is therefore important. For older modules, tested used or exchange parts are options besides remaining stock. With recurring demand, planning a migration to a current controller generation pays off.

What a request for control modules should contain

  • full order number and revision
  • photo of the module with its labels
  • new, used or exchange acceptable
  • whether a program backup exists
  • quantity and urgency
