Proximity sensors tell the control system whether a part is present or a movement has reached its end. They are inexpensive, but without them the line stops.

Three types and their ratings

Inductive sensors detect metal without contact and are very robust. Capacitive sensors also detect plastic, wood or liquids, for example for fill levels. Optical sensors work with light as through-beam, retro-reflective or diffuse sensors and bridge larger distances.

For the replacement, housing and thread such as M12 or M18, sensing distance, flush or non-flush mounting, PNP or NPN output, normally open or normally closed and connection by plug or cable matter. A wrong output type means the control system sees no signal.

What a request for proximity sensors should contain

  • type designation of the sensor
  • housing, thread and sensing distance
  • output PNP or NPN, normally open or closed
  • connection: plug type or cable length
  • quantity, ideally with stock
