Sensor, motor or enclosure: the degree of protection (IP rating) shows how well a device is protected against dust and water. Overlooking it during replacement risks early failures.

How the IP code is structured

The first digit to IEC 60529 stands for protection against solid objects and contact, from 0 to 6. 6 means dust-tight. The second digit stands for protection against water, from 0 to 9.

IP65 protects against water jets, IP67 against temporary immersion. IP69 or IP69K covers high-pressure and steam-jet cleaning as used in the food industry. A higher digit does not always include the lower ones: a device rated IP67 is not automatically suitable for water jets unless it also carries IP65.

What a request with an IP rating should contain

  • required degree of protection, several if applicable
  • environment: dust, splash water, cleaning, temperature
  • cleaning agents, if chemically aggressive
  • nameplate of the previous device
  • quantity and requested delivery date
