A large share of failures in hydraulic systems is caused by contaminated oil. Particles wear pumps, make valves stick and destroy seals. The filter is therefore a small part with a big effect.

Cleanliness code and filter rating

Oil cleanliness is stated to ISO 4406 with three numbers, for example 18/16/13. They stand for the number of particles larger than 4, 6 and 14 micrometres per millilitre. Each step up means roughly twice as many particles.

The filter rating defines how well a filter retains particles of a certain size. The required cleanliness depends on the most sensitive components; servo and proportional valves need cleaner oil than simple switching valves. A clogged filter is detected by the clogging indicator.

What a request for filter elements should contain

  • type designation of the element or filter housing
  • filter rating and filter material
  • dimensions and seal material
  • position: suction, pressure or return filter
  • quantity, ideally for several change intervals
