Bright steel has a clean surface and tight dimensional tolerances. It saves machining when the delivery condition suits the application.

Delivery conditions and tolerance classes

Technical delivery conditions are covered by EN 10277, dimensions and tolerances by EN 10278. Cold drawn bright steel (+C) usually achieves tolerance class h9 to h11 for round bars. Peeled bright steel (+SH) is machined free of mill scale and surface defects.

Ground bright steel (+SL) achieves tighter tolerances such as h8 to h6 and a very smooth surface, for example for shafts and guides. The tolerance classes follow the ISO system to ISO 286. Besides the diameter, straightness and length tolerance also matter.

What a request for bright steel should contain

  • steel grade and delivery condition, for example +C, +SH or +SL
  • diameter or cross-section with tolerance class
  • length: mill length, fixed length or cut to size
  • requirements for straightness and surface
  • quantity and inspection certificate
